QUANTUM PHYSICS : OBJECTION AGAINST SUPERPOSITION In The Double Slit Experiment
The double slit experiments with one electron being fired one at a time have always shown an interference pattern under no observer condition. That being the case, the assumption was that the electron behaved like a wave and not as a particle. (However, when the experiment is done with an observer, the electron behaved as a particle as manifested on the wall.) Given this interference pattern, the Schrodinger equation was formulated which gives the probability of the electron hitting the wall at a certain spot coming from the 2 slits of the wall which is between the electron gun and the wall where interference pattern is shown. For the electron to behave like a wave, it was assumed that the electron passed thru the 2 slits at the same time. That means the electron was both on 2 positions at the same time. And that is what scientists call the superposition of the electron. And this assumption is further bolstered by the famous Schrodinger thought experiment in which the cat is assumed to be both dead and alive at the same time. This I believe is a very bold assumption. There is no evidence to show that this is true given the results ofthe double slit experiment. Reviewing the facts of the experiment, the following are shown to be factual:
1. Under no observation or no detector to gather the data, the electrons always behaved like a wave. (I used the term like not as to make clear that there was no actual wave observed or detected. The electron was assumed to behave like a wave because of the interference pattern so it was presumed to be a wave as a logical assumption based on the present knowledge of science.)
2. Under observation or with detector to gather data, the electrons always behaved as a particle which passed through one slit at a time. There was no interference pattern formed but only 2 columns of electron dot spots side by side projected from the 2 slits to the barrier wall.
3. Therefore, there is no observation nor a detector that detected that the electrons passed through the two slits at the same time.
4. The electron behaved like a wave, but there was no wave detected as the experiment factually asserted that when a detector or observer is present to observe the experiment, the electron behaved as a particle.
Up to this present time, it remains a mystery how the electron behaved like a wave in those experiments. Did the electron transform itself into energy which created a wave that passed thru the two slits and formed two waves that interacted with each other, then collapsed to a single electron particle once it hit the wall? Or did it split into two particles? (but I don't understand how two electron particles hitting each other could behave like a wave.) Well, no one really knows what exactly happened to the electrons after firing the gun when no observer or detector is present to gather data.
The reason for my objection against the notion that the electron is in two places at the same time is that it violates our basic human intuition that it is impossible for a thing to be in two or multiple places at the same time. It is more popularly known in quantum physics as superposition. Our human experience on the natural physical realm has never demonstrated that violation. And under the thought experiment of Schrodinger, the assertion even becomes more presumptuous when he asserts that the cat is both dead and alive at the same time. It does not only go against common sense, but also violates the basic notion of reality on the principle of non-contradiction that is,”SOMETHING CAN NOT BE AND BE AT THE SAME TIME AND IN THE SAME SENSE”. I am present and absent in the room at the same time in the same sense is a contradiction. But to be present and absent in the room at the same time but in a different sense that is to be physically present but mentally absent is possible and is not a contradiction. I am not sure if scientists see the difference between the statement that an electron can be in two places at the same time and the statement that the cat is both dead and alive at the same time. The former statement may not necessarily be logically self-contradictory, although it is counter-intuitive because we have no human experience of that on the natural level (in the same way that the notion of Einstein’s theory of relativity which asserts that the dimensions of space and time are not constant but relative was counter-intuitive because we have no human experience of such before). That former statement may not necessarily be logically self-contradictory if our present notion of certain aspects of spatial property is in error in which case a correction could give rise to that possibility in the same way that Einstein’s theory of relativity was considered absurd before because our former notion of spatial property was wrong. However, Schrodinger has not given any explanation of that error nor mentioned anything about it. Nevertheless, though it may not necessarily logically self contradictory we cannot say that this is true because there is no evidence to prove it, it is logically self contradictory with the present notion of spatial properties and as I said there is no human experience on the natural level that a thing is in two or multiple places at the same time. However, the latter assertion is really superlatively very bold because it is absolutely logically self-contradictory. The principle of non-contradiction is a basic notion of knowledge, just like logic is a basic notion of knowledge. Otherwise we cannot know anything. Not because science has discovered many things that violate our basic intuition of reality like the Relativity of Einstein, we can now readily and arbitrarily violate any intuitive notion of reality without evidence to form our subjective theory of reality. This will lead scientific studies to science fiction and fantasy.
I don’t know whether scientists understand the basic principle of human knowledge. Human knowledge comes from the experience of the exterior world including his interior self. However, human knowledge has inherent parts within itself in which it operates like the principle of non-contradiction. This knowledge of the principle of non-contradiction comes from the experience of reality and is an integral part of human knowledge. Reality is non-contradictory. Just like a computer, it has an operating system through which data is being processed but data or software applications has to be downloaded or else it has nothing. As an analogy, part of the operating system of the brain is the principle of non-contradiction and logic. As the popular saying goes “g-i-g-o”, garbage in garbage out. No garbage no data. In the human brain, no experience no knowledge. In short human knowledge rejects contradiction or else we cannot know anything.
But how come many scientists have readily embraced this theory of superposition from Schrodinger? There are many professors in MIT in USA that espouse and teach this theory in the lecture halls of MIT. I believe because Newtonian Physics has been outmoded by the new Physics which has violated many of our basic human intuitions specifically the relativity of Einstein and other phenomena, this has swayed other contemporary scientists of Einstein like Schrodinger and the present scientists to form unwarranted interpretations. David Albert (Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the Rockefeller University and Professor of Philosophy and Director of the M.A. Program in The Philosophical Foundations of Physics at Columbia University in New York) mentioned in one interview that there are instances in science that one need a certain philosophical sophistication in order to interpret properly the meaning of certain scientific findings. He also said that the many world interpretation is something that we can never account for because that is part of the implications of the many world theory. The many world theory explains that the other universes are outside of our universe we live in which are beyond our reach. That means there is no way by which we can detect them. He doesn’t believe in superposition neither in the many world interpretation.
There are several occasions I heard that in quantum computing the electron is also into superposition which means it is both spin up and spin down at the same time. The electron is in both state of being spin up and spin down at the same time. Again there is no evidence to this. In fact, the result of quantum computing even demonstrate that superposition is not true, it does not happen. To illustrate this point, in a classical computer given two classical bits, the permutation would be 0-0,0-1,1-0 and 1-1. Each permutation correspond to a definite answer for the computation or problem. In a quantum computer, the quantum bit or qbit is said to be both spin up and down at the same time. This means the qbit is both 0 and 1 at the same time. Given two qbits, the resulting permutation 0-0,0-1,1-0 and 1-1 therefore is identical since the qbit is both 0 and 1 at the same time. If superposition is true, how can the quantum computer recognize a definite answer of 0-1 or any of the other if it is identical. But since the quantum computer is able to get a definite answer from one of them, that means the qbit is not both 0 and 1 at the same time. The qbit is not in a superposition. Then the question is – what is really happening with the qbit inside the computer. The qbit is changing its spin in a very high speed that I would speculate that it is able to make the different permutations at a very high speed that it seems to be happening at the same time. That would be the logical conclusion. Thus, that the electron (if the qbit is an electron) is in a superposition is not true.
